Arriving in Interlaken: An Evening by Lake Thun

Looking back at my first evening near Interlaken, I remember how quickly the journey seemed to slow down. After travelling through Switzerland and finally reaching the Bernese Oberland, I found myself standing beside Lake Thun beneath a sky filled with soft evening light.

Sailboats rested quietly on the water, the mountains rose around the lake and the setting sun gave the clouds and distant slopes a beautiful golden glow. It was a peaceful introduction to a part of Switzerland that I had been looking forward to exploring.

Interlaken Between Two Lakes

Interlaken occupies a remarkable position in the Bernese Oberland, between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. Its name reflects this geography: a place between lakes.

The two lakes give the region much of its character. Lake Thun stretches westward toward the city of Thun, surrounded by mountain peaks, villages, castles and green hills. Lake Brienz lies to the east and is especially known for its striking turquoise water and dramatic alpine surroundings.

Interlaken is also a popular starting point for exploring the wider region. From here, travellers can continue toward mountain destinations such as Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen and the Jungfrau region, take boat trips across either lake or simply spend time walking beside the water.

Yet on that first evening, I did not need a busy itinerary. The lake itself was enough.

Golden Light Across Lake Thun

The atmosphere beside Lake Thun changed beautifully as the evening progressed. One side of the sky remained cool and cloudy, while the other became warmer and brighter as the final sunlight reached the mountains.

The sailboats barely seemed to move. Their masts created thin silhouettes against the surrounding landscape, and the reflections of the sky spread across the gentle surface of the water. Even a solitary duck drifting near the shore became part of the scene.

These quieter moments are often what I remember most clearly from a journey. There was no major landmark to reach and no schedule to follow—only clear water, mountain air and enough time to watch the light slowly change.

I Couldn’t Resist the Lake

I had planned to walk beside the lake, enjoy the view and take a few photographs. But standing so close to that wonderfully clear water made it almost impossible to leave without stepping into it.

So, of course, I went for a swim.

It was one of those spontaneous travel decisions that makes perfect sense in the moment. The mountains surrounded the lake, swans moved gracefully across the water and the stones remained clearly visible beneath the surface.

I did not need to swim far. Simply being in the water and looking back toward the shore made the experience feel special. It transformed the evening from a beautiful arrival into a memory that belonged entirely to that place and moment.

A Peaceful Beginning in Switzerland

Turkey had been filled with sunshine, bright colours and warm adventures beside the Aegean Sea. Switzerland immediately introduced a different mood: quieter, cooler and framed by mountains.

Lake Thun was the perfect place to begin this new chapter. The combination of water, alpine scenery and changing evening light created exactly the kind of peaceful arrival I had hoped for.

Interlaken offers countless possibilities for adventurous days, but it also rewards travellers who take time to appreciate its gentler side. A simple walk beside the lake, an evening panorama or an unplanned swim can become just as memorable as any famous attraction.

Next: The St. Beatus Caves

The following day would lead from the open lake into a completely different environment: the St. Beatus Caves on the northern shore of Lake Thun.

The extensive cave system lies inside the mountain between Interlaken and Thun. Waterfalls, grottos and ancient limestone formations create a hidden underground world, with approximately one kilometre made accessible to visitors.

That adventure would become the next chapter of my journey. For this first evening, however, Lake Thun had already given me everything I needed: mountain views, golden light, peaceful water and one swim that I simply could not resist.
